The adventures of a tripod living in NorCal

Macie Mae a tripod puppy and her prosthetic

We are excited to be able to share Macie Mae’s crazy life and her journey as a tripod. We have gone through the long process of getting her a prosthetic device for her missing right hind paw. I will continue to add to the blog post by going back historically from the the first day we heard about her and her 6 siblings who resided at a rescue sanctuary in Willits, CA.  Our family adopted her at 4-months-old on New Year’s Day, 2017.  She is a Border Collie/Great Pyrenees mix.  She was already missing her right rear paw when she and her siblings came to the rescue at 3- months-old.  The rescue sanctuary does not know how it went missing but know that it is from some sort of trauma. The veterinarians said it could have been from the umbilical cord in utero or could have been another trauma while she, her mom, and 6 siblings were fending for themselves. She received her prosthetic yesterday from UC Davis Veterinary School under the guidance of the fabulous Dr. Jamie Peyton. Her wonderful rehab vet Dr. Erin Troy and staff  in Walnut Creek, CA help to get her stronger and keep her pain free.  More to come along with photos! Wish us luck!

My first day with my prosthetic. I’m not so sure

Gorgeous girl, welcome to the community! You’ve found some pawsome humans who are going to love you and spoil you rotten. Here’s a crazy coincidence or rather 2:

    1) we were just talking the other day about how we would love to see more stories here about Tripawds with prosthetic devices. AND THERE YOU ARE! Seriously, you showed up a day after we said that. We are SO looking forward to following along with your pawgress. Those pros at UCD know their stuff and we are thrilled you are working with them on your new leg.

    2) we are from Humboldt County originally, just up the road from Willits. Too funny.

Oh and by the way, there is a GREAT group of NorCal Tripawds parents who meet up in spring and fall at the Mill Valley Dog Park. I know they would be so thrilled to get to know you! See:

We are looking forward to your next update so don’t be shy!

Thanks so much Jerry. Wow, a couple of coincidences for sure! I appreciate the warm welcome. I have been searching far and wide for others with experience with prosthetics for their animals but only seem to find them in news articles. If I can end up being one of those people and help others, I will be happy too. There is so much great information on Tripawds and I look forward to learning a lot more. So far miss Macie Mae is not a fan of the prosthetic but Dr Marcellin-Little DID say it could take months of increasing her very slowly on the prosthetic. Im not so sure how quickly her progress will be but I will update regardless! I will start by writing posts from day one and her journey to now. Hopefully, when I’m done, she will be on it! Ha! Also, I really look forward to the Mill Valley meet ups. Macie Mae does love to play and she does love dogs. 🙂
